The historic borough market in Gravesend town centre has received a boost of nearly £500,000 from a European Union grant scheme.

Centuries old Gravesend Borough Market will benefit from a €471,000 grant made to Gravesham council from the European Regional Development Fund.

As part of the grant, the council is expected to create a business support package for market stall holders, alongside partners from southern England and across The Channel in northern France.

It comes as part of a three year project known as GoTrade, which stands for “Growth of the Visitor Economy through Traditional Markets, Employment and Skills” and aims to be increase footfall in the town centre.

Cllr Samir Jassal, business development cabinet member, said: “Markets are major contributors to local economies and provide a sense of community for those that use them. This project will help our market to be even more successful.

“This is a great achievement for our economic development team to secure this funding which will complement the Coastal Community Funding for the refurbishment of the borough market building.”

The council received £1.8million from the Coastal Communities Fund to refurbish the building, which was first established in 1268.
